The fingers are moved by several muscles in the forearm. Hand grippers help strengthen the muscles that close the fingers. These are the large muscles on the palm side of the forearm and are known as flexors.
It is also important to exercise the muscles opposite the flexors that are responsible for opening the fingers. These muscles are know as the extensors.
